About Russian Rock
Russian rock grew from amateur Soviet bands of the 1970s into the defining sound of the perestroika years. Groups such as Mashina Vremeni, Aquarium and Kino built followings through unofficial recordings and the Leningrad Rock Club, where lyrics carried as much weight as the music. After 1991 bands from Yekaterinburg, Vladivostok, Ufa and St Petersburg, including Nautilus Pompilius, Mumiy Troll, Zemfira and Leningrad, took the style into the commercial mainstream.
