Über Rock en Español

Mexican rock that found its language in the late 1980s after years of state hostility to local rock acts. Caifanes, Maldita Vecindad, and Café Tacvba built a uniquely Mexican rock idiom, mixing punk and new wave with bolero, son jarocho, and lyrics in Spanish. Maná turned it into a stadium product across Latin America in the 1990s, and Julieta Venegas, Molotov, and Zoé carried the scene into the 2000s and beyond.
