Über Caifanes
Caifanes formed in Mexico City in 1987 around Saúl Hernández and helped define rock en español through four albums of dark, atmospheric guitar music in the early 1990s. Their 1988 single La Negra Tomasa, a cumbia cover styled with post-punk synths, gave them a hit before they had built their own canon. The 1992 album El Silencio, recorded with Adrian Belew, and 1994's El Nervio del Volcán are the band's most-cited records. After a 1995 split, Hernández continued under the name Jaguares; the original lineup reunited in 2011 and now tours steadily.
