About Krio Pop

Krio pop is the contemporary popular music of Sierra Leone, sung mainly in Krio, the country's lingua franca. It grew in the 2000s after the civil war, drawing on Afropop, R&B, dancehall and local rhythms, and singers such as Emmerson used it for everyday stories and pointed social commentary. A newer generation of Freetown artists now carries it through streaming and social media.
