Funaná

Über Funaná

Funaná is the hard-driving accordion and ferrinho music of Santiago island, built on the gaita squeezebox and the scraped iron bar that gives it its clatter. Long dismissed by the colonial elite and effectively suppressed, it exploded into national pride after independence when bands like Bulimundo plugged it in. Fast, rural, and defiant, it remains Cape Verde's most propulsive dance music.
