Trinidad's topical song form, sung in the calypso tents in the weeks before Carnival and judged in competition for the Calypso Monarch crown. The lyrics comment on politics, scandal and daily life, and the best calypsonians are read as journalists as much as entertainers. It spread across the Caribbean and to Britain with the Windrush generation, and gave the wider world its first sense of what Trinidad sounded like.
