The biggest star Iranian popular music has produced, a child performer who became the defining singer and style icon of the 1970s. After the 1979 revolution she stayed in Iran and did not sing in public for twenty-one years, because women were barred from performing solo. She left in 2000 and resumed a career that had been frozen, to audiences who had grown up on cassettes of her old records. Her voice carries a particular weight for Iranians as a result.
