About Chutney
Indo-Trinidadian popular song, carried by the descendants of indentured labourers brought from India after emancipation. It sets Bhojpuri and English lyrics against dholak and harmonium, and Sundar Popo's recordings from the late 1960s made it a commercial form. From the late 1980s it fused with soca, in Drupatee's and Rikki Jai's records, into a Carnival music of its own.
