About Sundar Popo

The singer who turned Indo-Trinidadian folk song into a commercial popular music, and the figure every chutney artist since has worked from. Nana and Nani, recorded at the end of the 1960s with Moean Mohammed's orchestra, mixed Bhojpuri and English over dholak and dhantal and became the form's first hit. He recorded prolifically until his death in 2000. His songs are still sung at weddings across the Indo-Caribbean diaspora.
