About Batuku
Batuku is the oldest music of Cape Verde, a women's tradition from Santiago built on polyrhythmic hand-clapping and a cloth bundle beaten between the knees, topped by call-and-response singing and the swaying finason dance. Rooted in the islands' African heritage, it was long marginalized before a 1990s revival led by Finaçon and later Lura and Mayra Andrade brought it into contemporary Cape Verdean pop.
