About Zouglou

Zouglou began around 1990 among students at the university in Abidjan, who set chanted complaints about money, food and campus life to percussion and call-and-response vocals. Les Parents du Campus put it on record in 1991, and Magic System later carried it to European radio. Humour and social commentary are structural to it rather than incidental, which is why the best zouglou records still read as reporting.
