About Iranian Regional Music

Iran is not synonymous with Persian, and its regional traditions are distinct musical worlds. Kurdish ensemble music from Sanandaj, carried by the Kamkars, has its own repertoire and modal system. The south, around Bushehr and the Gulf, has ney anban bagpipe and dense percussion shaped by centuries of trade with Africa and India. Azeri, Baluchi, Turkmen, Luri and Gilaki traditions sit alongside them.
