Congolese rumba is the foundational genre, but ndombolo and soukous are the dominant sounds today. Rumba emerged in the 1940s from a fusion of Cuban son and local Congolese rhythms and has since shaped virtually every popular genre in Central and East Africa.

Franco Luambo, who led TPOK Jazz for more than 30 years, is widely regarded as the most influential Congolese musician of all time. Among living artists, Fally Ipupa and Koffi Olomidé are the best known internationally.

Soukous is a fast, guitar-driven dance music that evolved from Congolese rumba in the 1960s and 1970s. Characterised by virtuoso fingerpicked guitar solos in the so-called sebene section, soukous became one of Africa's first pan-continental pop genres and strongly influenced popular music across East, Central, and West Africa.

Ndombolo is a high-energy dance music that emerged in Kinshasa in the mid-1990s, pushing soukous tempos even faster and introducing provocative dance moves. Artists like Koffi Olomidé, Werrason, and Awilo Longomba made ndombolo the dominant African dance genre of the late 1990s and 2000s.

Yes. In December 2021 UNESCO inscribed Congolese rumba on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, recognising its role as a unifying cultural force in Central Africa and the Congolese diaspora.
