About Wolf Biermann
The DDR's most famous dissident musician. Son of a Jewish resistance fighter murdered at Auschwitz, Biermann emigrated to East Germany out of Communist idealism. Banned from performing in 1965, his citizenship was revoked in 1976 while touring West Germany, triggering the biggest artist-led protest in DDR history.
