A grouping for Togolese popular song built directly on local rhythm and language, mostly Ewé and Mina. It runs from Bella Bellow and Akofa Akoussah in the late 1960s and 1970s through Afia Mala and King Mensah's agbadja-rooted records to Nana Benz du Togo, who set vodun chant against electronic production. It is an editorial listening category rather than one indigenous genre.
