The alternative scene that grew up around the Bangkok label Bakery Music in the early 1990s and never went away. Modern Dog, formed by art-school kids in 1992, became the genre's flagship band and the first Thai rock act to chart in Asia outside Thailand. The 2010s wave, with Slot Machine, Phum Viphurit, Stamp Apiwat, and Tilly Birds, built a bilingual indie aesthetic that travels comfortably between Bangkok, Tokyo, and SXSW. Phum Viphurit's Lover Boy (2017) was Thai indie's first global TikTok moment.
