Chinese Folk

Über Chinese Folk

Often called xin minyao (new folk), this is the singer-songwriter tradition that grew out of the Beijing rock scene in the 2000s and went mainstream in the 2010s. Acoustic, lyric-driven, and often regional in subject matter, it produced introspective storytellers like Li Zhi, Song Dongye, and Zhao Lei whose songs traveled through livehouses and video-platform virality.
