American folk music moved from Woody Guthrie's Dust Bowl ballads through the Greenwich Village revival of the early 1960s to Bob Dylan's transformation of the song into literature. Built on acoustic guitar and plain speech, it became the sound of the labour and civil rights movements. Simon & Garfunkel carried its harmonies to the top of the pop charts.
