About Arsenio Rodriguez

Blind tres player and bandleader Arsenio Rodriguez is often called the architect of modern son montuno. In the 1940s he expanded the traditional son sextet with conga, piano, and additional trumpets, opening up the long instrumental montuno section that salsa would later inherit. His unapologetic embrace of Afro-Cuban roots reshaped what Cuban dance music could sound like.
