About Norwegian Black Metal

The most internationally influential music Norway has produced, and its most notorious. Centred on a small Oslo scene around the record shop Helvete in the early 1990s, the second wave of black metal built a frostbitten, lo-fi, tremolo-driven sound from bands like Mayhem, Darkthrone, Emperor, and Immortal. The scene became globally infamous for a string of church burnings and the 1993 murder of Mayhem's Euronymous, and went on to shape extreme metal worldwide.
