Portuguese hip-hop emerged in the early 1990s from Lisbon and Porto's suburban housing projects, where Afro-Portuguese and immigrant communities built a scene grounded in social commentary and identity. Sam the Kid, Valete, and later Plutonio established hip-hop tuga as one of Portugal's most vital contemporary genres.
