About City Pop
City pop is the sophisticated, urban Japanese popular music that flourished in Tokyo during the late 1970s and 1980s economic boom: West Coast AOR, soft funk, Latin and bossa influences, and the gloss of brand-new digital production. Largely forgotten in Japan by the mid-1990s, the genre was rediscovered globally in the 2010s through YouTube algorithms that pushed Mariya Takeuchi's Plastic Love and Anri's Last Summer Whisper to a worldwide audience.
