Chinese Rock

Über Chinese Rock

Known in Mandarin as yaogun, Chinese rock emerged in Beijing in the mid-1980s when Cui Jian plugged in an electric guitar and made the personal political. The first generation drew on hard rock and heavy metal; subsequent waves added punk, alt-rock, and protest folk. Yaogun stayed culturally important even as commercial pop swept past it.
