Mariya Takeuchi married Tatsuro Yamashita in 1982 and the two have spent forty years quietly running the most influential household in Japanese pop. Her 1984 album Variety contained Plastic Love, a song forgotten by Japan in the 1990s and unexpectedly resurrected as a global YouTube phenomenon in 2018. The 2023 album Precious Days became her sixth straight number-one record in Japan, more than four decades after her debut.
