Immortal, formed in Bergen in 1991 by Abbath and Demonaz, built a self-contained mythology around the frozen fictional realm of Blashyrkh rather than the Satanic and anti-Christian themes of their peers. Their blistering, fast-tremolo sound and corpse-paint imagery, captured in the much-memed video for the album At the Heart of Winter, made them one of the genre's most recognisable bands worldwide. Sons of Northern Darkness (2002) is widely cited as a peak of the second-wave sound. The band has continued through lineup disputes and remains a festival draw.
