Me Rehúso

Danny Ocean

The story behind the song

Danny Ocean recorded Me Rehúso on Valentine's Day. He had moved to Miami to get away from the turmoil in Venezuela, but the woman he liked was still in college and could not come with him. The song he wrote about that separation is a refusal to let go, built from almost nothing: two interlocking synthesizer lines that barely change, a lone sampled hand drum creeping in around forty seconds, a hint of reggaeton beat just before the minute mark, and then his own voice, scratchy and multitracked, carrying the heartache. He released it on YouTube in September 2016, and at first his main listeners were friends. Then his manager played it for his wife, the Venezuelan TV host Osmariel Villalobos, and the song began to travel. It spread so widely that it charted on Spotify in every Latin American country, the first song by an independent artist to do so. In June 2017 Ocean signed with Warner and Atlantic Records re-released it, along with an English version called Baby I Won't, and it went on to become the lead single of his debut album 54+1. The video has passed 1.9 billion views on YouTube. Written by a young Venezuelan who had left his country, and the person he loved, behind, it is a heartbreak song shaped by emigration. Recorded on the most romantic day of the year and first shared with a handful of friends, it turned an unknown independent artist into a voice heard across the whole of Latin America.
