Ang Huling El Bimbo

Eraserheads

The story behind the song

Ely Buendia has explained the song simply. In a podcast interview he recalled a huge crush on an older girl who taught him a dance, and said it was the first time he had truly been in love. Then he never saw her again. Out of that memory came "Ang Huling El Bimbo", The Last El Bimbo, on the Eraserheads' third album Cutterpillow in 1995. The song is often described as a bittersweet mini-epic in the spirit of the Beatles. It name-checks the screen actress Paraluman and borrows its title from the tango standard "El Bimbo", the dance at the heart of the memory. A violinist plays on the recording without credit. The video, directed by Auraeus Solito and shot at his home, premiered on television in February 1996 and won MTV Asia's Viewer's Choice Award in 1997, making the Eraserheads the first Philippine act to receive that honour. The song's reach only grew. When the radio station NU 107 signed off for the last time on 8 November 2010, this was the final song it played. In 2018 it became the title and backbone of a jukebox musical built from around 40 Eraserheads songs, which premiered in Pasay and was later streamed free online during the pandemic. When the band reunited for a concert in 2022, they named it after the song too. A memory of one dance has become the closest thing Filipino rock has to a shared heartbreak.
