About New York Hip-Hop

Hip-hop was born at a Bronx block party on 11 August 1973, when DJ Kool Herc extended the drum breaks of funk records. Grandmaster Flash perfected the turntable, Afrika Bambaataa organised the culture, and by the 1980s Run-DMC from Queens and Public Enemy from Long Island had made rap a national force. The 1990s belonged to Brooklyn and Queens: the Notorious B.I.G., Nas, the Wu-Tang Clan, and Jay-Z. The city still sets the template, from Cardi B's Bronx drill-era pop to the Brooklyn and Bronx drill scenes of the 2020s.
