About Merengue

Merengue is the national music of the Dominican Republic, a fast two-step built on tambora drum, güira scraper, and accordion or brass. Rural in origin, it was pushed to the center of national identity during the Trujillo dictatorship and then reinvented by bandleaders like Johnny Ventura and Wilfrido Vargas, who added horns, showmanship, and pop hooks. UNESCO inscribed it as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016, and it remains the sound of every Dominican party.
