About Malian Hip-Hop

Bambara and French language rap from Bamako, growing through the 2000s as Iba One and Master Soumy built the country's first stadium-scale hip-hop audience. Less internationally exported than Senegalese hip-hop, but heavier on social commentary. Master Soumy's protest tracks against political corruption and Iba One's commercial dominance frame the scene; Mylmo represents the 2010s new school.
