About Machacando
Machacando is the dance style Maelé built and named in Equatorial Guinea in the late 1970s, also known in Fang as omés, oblum, ozilá or machá. It sets a 4/4 dance pulse against female choruses, brass bridges, synthesisers and strummed acoustic guitars, drawing on Fang rhythm and on makossa. That combination keeps it distinct from the rumba and soukous derivatives heard elsewhere in Central Africa.
