A grouping for Ivorian records that put local instruments, languages and rhythms at the centre of a popular arrangement rather than as decoration. It runs from Amédée Pierre's Bété song forms in the 1960s through Antoinette Konan's ahoko-led pop in the 1980s to the pan-African writing of Dobet Gnahoré and Manou Gallo. It is an editorial listening category, not a single indigenous genre.
