About Hungarian alt and new wave
The Hungarian new wave and the alt-pop generations that followed it. Bikini and Sziámi cut the first national new-wave records in the 1980s, Bonanza Banzai brought synth-pop to a generation raised on cassette dubs, and the post-2010 indie-electronic wave of Halott Pénz, Wellhello, and Margaret Island opened Hungarian-language alt music to a streaming audience. The thread across forty years is a refusal to follow the rock canon and a willingness to put Hungarian lyrics over whatever production sounded most current in a given decade.
