Bubu
About Bubu
Bubu is the processional music of the Temne people of northern Sierra Leone, played by groups blowing interlocking parts on bamboo and metal pipes. It was first used in Temne ceremonies and later in Ramadan processions. Janka Nabay electrified it in Freetown in the 1990s, became known as the bubu king, and after moving to the United States recorded it with the Bubu Gang for David Byrne's Luaka Bop label.
