Umm Kulthum is the most famous Egyptian singer and the most revered voice in the entire Arab world. Known as the Star of the East, her monthly radio concerts from the 1940s to the 1970s brought life across the region to a halt. She remains a cultural icon decades after her death in 1975, and songs like Enta Omri are considered sacred by Arab audiences.

Tarab is the classical Arabic art-song tradition that reached its golden age in mid-20th-century Cairo. It is built on long, improvisational vocal performances, the maqam modal system, and large orchestras of oud, qanun, and strings. A single tarab song by Umm Kulthum or Abdel Halim Hafez could last an hour and move listeners to a state of ecstatic emotional release.

Mahraganat, also called electro-shaabi, is the auto-tuned electronic street music that emerged from Cairo's working-class neighborhoods around 2010. Built on cheap software, hard synth beats, and shouted vocals about everyday life, it became the dominant youth sound in Egypt despite periodic official bans. Artists like Sadat helped pioneer the genre.

Amr Diab is the best-selling Arab artist of all time and the defining figure of modern Egyptian pop. In recent years, rapper Wegz has become one of the most-streamed artists in the Arab world, especially after his 2022 hit Dorak Gai. The rock band Cairokee, mahraganat stars, and singers like Angham and Sherine also command huge audiences.
