The Tragically Hip were the Kingston, Ontario rock band that became Canada's quasi-official national act through the 1990s and 2000s without ever quite breaking the United States, which became part of their identity. Gord Downie's literate lyrics about hockey, the prairies, and small-town tragedy made them a fixture of Canadian summer. Downie died of brain cancer in 2017, weeks after the band's televised farewell concert.
