Tiken Jah Fakoly writes reggae as political argument. Le pays va mal, released in 2002 as Côte d'Ivoire slid toward civil war, was direct enough that he left the country and settled in Mali. Plus rien ne m'étonne, from the 2004 album Coup de gueule, turned a list of African resources and the powers that take them into one of the most quoted songs on the continent. He has kept the balafon and kora audible inside the reggae arrangements throughout.
