About Tatico Henríquez

Tatico Henríquez is the king of merengue típico, the accordionist who dragged the Cibao valley's country music into the modern era. In the 1960s and 1970s he sped up the tempo, added saxophone and electric bass, and played with a wild inventiveness that every típico accordionist since has had to answer to. He died at 36, but his recordings remain the genre's benchmark and Juanita Morel is still a standard at any Dominican country dance.
