About Susana Baca

Susana Baca is the two-time Latin Grammy-winning singer who carried Afro-Peruvian music to the world. A scholar as well as a performer, she spent years researching and reviving the nearly forgotten repertoire of Peru's Black communities. Her haunting recording of María Landó, released on David Byrne's Afro-Peruvian Classics compilation, became her international breakthrough. She later served as Peru's Minister of Culture, the first Afro-Peruvian to hold a cabinet post.
