Sumé

About Sumé

The band that started modern Greenlandic popular music, formed by Greenlandic students in Denmark and led by Malik Høegh and Per Berthelsen. Their 1973 debut Sumut was the first rock album sung in Greenlandic, and it arrived as an argument: the lyrics attacked Danish colonial rule at a moment when home rule was still years away. Roughly one in five Greenlanders is said to have bought a copy. They released three albums in four years and are still the reference point every later act is measured against.
