About S. E. Rogie

S. E. Rogie was born in Fonikoh in Pujehun District and became the best-known palm-wine guitarist Sierra Leone produced, singing in Krio, Mende, Temne and English. His 1961 single My Lovely Elizabeth, issued on his own Rogie label, carried his gentle fingerpicked style across West Africa. He moved to the United States in 1973 and settled in the San Francisco Bay Area, then relocated to England in 1988 after an invitation from BBC Radio 1 DJ Andy Kershaw. Real World Records released Dead Men Don't Smoke Marijuana in 1994, and he died in London that July.
