About Sam Hui
Sam Hui is widely credited as the father of Cantopop. By writing and singing in colloquial Cantonese instead of Mandarin or English, he gave Hong Kong's working class their own pop voice, often satirising office life, money worries, and city living. His 1970s film soundtracks with brother Michael Hui defined an era of HK cinema and his songbook is still covered every karaoke night in the territory.
