About Orchestra Baobab

Founded in 1970 as the house band of the Baobab Club in Dakar, Orchestra Baobab fused Cuban son, Wolof and Mandinka melody, and West African guitar lines into a sound that made the club one of the great African music addresses of the 1970s. Their album Pirates Choice, recorded in 1982 and reissued globally by World Circuit in 1989, helped open Senegalese music to international audiences. After a long pause they reunited in 2001 and have toured continuously since.
