Muluqèn Mèllèssè was one of the most powerful voices of the Swinging Addis generation, a singer who began performing as a boy and became a fixture of the Addis Ababa club scene in the 1970s. His raw, gospel-inflected delivery over funk arrangements produced some of the era's most enduring records. He later stepped away from secular music for religious life before a celebrated return, and remained revered until his death in 2022.
