Legião Urbana was the most influential and best-selling rock band in Brazilian history, led by the poetic, impassioned voice of Renato Russo. Emerging from the Brasília punk scene in the early 1980s, they channeled the frustrations and idealism of a generation coming of age at the end of the dictatorship. Anthems like Tempo Perdido and the epic Faroeste Caboclo made them a cultural touchstone before Russo's death from AIDS in 1996.
