Known as the White Zulu, Johnny Clegg defied apartheid's racial laws by forming multiracial bands that fused Zulu maskandi music with Western rock and folk. His song Asimbonanga, written for the imprisoned Nelson Mandela, became one of South Africa's most powerful anthems of resistance.
