Ferro Gaita, formed in 1996, brought funaná back to its raw roots, foregrounding the gaita accordion and the scraped ferrinho that give the band its name. Where Bulimundo electrified the genre, Ferro Gaita kept it earthy and relentless, and their debut Bandera Sagrada made them one of the most popular funaná acts of the modern era. They remain a staple of Cape Verdean dance floors at home and abroad.
