About Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou
Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou was an Ethiopian nun and pianist whose gently rolling, blues-tinged compositions became one of the most beloved discoveries of the Éthiopiques series. Classically trained in Europe as a young woman, she entered a monastic life yet kept composing, blending Western piano with the pentatonic melancholy of Ethiopian modes. Rediscovered late in life, her meditative music found a devoted global audience before her death in 2023 at the age of 99.
