About Buika

Singer born in Palma de Mallorca in 1972 to parents who had arrived from Equatorial Guinea as political exiles in 1969, and the best-known artist of Equatoguinean descent anywhere. Her voice moves between copla, flamenco, soul and jazz, and reviewers reach for Nina Simone and Chavela Vargas to describe it. Mi Niña Lola in 2006 and Niña de Fuego in 2008 made her a major Spanish recording artist, and El Último Trago with Chucho Valdés won the Latin Grammy for best traditional tropical album in 2010. Her career belongs to Spain; she is included here as the clearest diaspora connection in the country's musical story.
