Arsen Dedić was Croatia's great chansonnier, a trained musician and published poet who treated popular song as literature. From the mid 1960s he built a catalog of quietly devastating songs about love and passing time, while also composing extensively for film and theatre. His verses are taught in schools, and his understated delivery influenced every Croatian singer-songwriter who followed.
